Barrage and Water Level Management Policy

The Barrage and Water Level Management Policy (BWLMP) is a public document that provides guidance as to how water levels are practically managed in the region, including a rationale for optimum lake level operation to achieve environmental, social, economic and water security outcomes. The BWLMP also details the principles and priorities for water level management for the CLLMM site.

Coorong and Lakes Alexandrina and Albert Wetland Ramsar site

The Ramsar site encompasses the Coorong National Park, Lake Alexandrina, Lake Albert, and tributaries, up to +0.85m AHD. Where unalienated crown land, DEWNR reserve or crown land under licence exists adjacent to the waters edge the boundary has been extended to include this cadastral parcel.

Donor Site Collection Plan

The Donor site collection plan consists of aerial imagery of the Donor site indicating access tracks and specific areas where the sediment will be collected and stored on site.

Donor and Translocation Sites

The Donor site was the location in the Coorong South Lagoon where sediment (containing Ruppia seed) was collected. The Donor site for the Ruppia Translocation Project was Lake Cantara (south).

The Translocation sites were locations in the Coorong South Lagoon were sediment collected from the Donor site was translocated to, in an attempt to improve the Ruppia tuberosa distribution and abundance.

Management Triggers

Management trigger are specific threshold values set to prompt timely management intervention.

In the case of the Coorong and Lakes, management triggers could include specific levels of:

  • Water levels (height and depth)
  • Dissolved Oxygen
  • Salinity
  • Temperature
  • Habitat (percentage of available aquatic plant habitat
  • Recruitment

Remediation works (from fish procedure)

There have been some remediation works undertaken on-site to improve the health of threatened fish populations, including providing environmental water to off channel (disconnected) wetlands.

Responsible Officer

The Responsible Officer is the DEWNR staff employee that is responsible for undertaking or overseeing the actions/tasks outlined in the procedures.

Risk Assessment

This risk assessment is about monitoring critical habitat triggers that can be used to assess the fish population under threat.

Ruppia Advisory Group

The Ruppia Advisory Group was established to seek input and advice from key scientists and project managers with regards to planning, operational delivery, trigger conditions and general project matters to progress a large-scale translocation project for Ruppia tuberosa in the Coorong.

Ruppia tuberosa

Ruppia tuberosa is an extremely salt tolerant, submergent macrophyte, which historically formed extensive beds in the South Lagoon of the Coorong, in areas inundated over the winter and spring and dry in the summer and autumn.

Ruppia tuberosa Translocation Plan

The Ruppia tuberosa translocation plan outlined the translocation strategy that was employed throughout the Ruppia Translocation Project.  Information included; project governance, planning phases, objectives of the translocation, site plans for donor and translocation sites, methodologies and project risks and mitigation arrangements.

Threatened Fish

These fish have national or state level conservation status, classing them as a threatened species

Threatened fish advisory group

The threatened fish advisory group consisted of South Australian government threatened fish experts, who gave advice and input across the threatened fish project work.

Translocation

This involves taking the top layer of sediment containing seed from a donor site and then embedding at treatment sites it into exposed mudflats of the Coorong.

Translocation Site Plans

The Translocation site collection plan consists of aerial imagery of each of the Translocation sites indicating access tracks and specific areas where the sediment will be stored on site and then translocated.

Weight Bearing Tests

Weight bearing tests involved, field assessments, undertaking Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing, using the CDP values, calculate the bearing pressure at the test location.  This information can be used to provide a recommendation regarding the maximum weight of vehicle to drive on the mud flats of the Coorong.
